3 Slot Game Moments That Make Us Feel Like We’re About to Win

By Casino Kelly

If you’ve watched my videos for any length of time, you’ve probably heard me say “I thought that was it!”.

Trust me, I’ve had that feeling more times than I can count.

The longer I’ve been playing slot games and talking with game designers, the more I’ve realized that modern slot games are incredibly good at making us “feel” like we’re just one spin away from a big win.

They’re exciting, entertaining, and honestly a lot of fun. But certain moments can also make us believe we’re getting closer to a win when that’s not actually how they work.

Here are three of the biggest ones I’ve noticed.

1. The Near Miss

This one gets me every time.

You land two jackpot symbols, and that third one stops just above or just below where you needed it. For a split second, you think, “I almost had it!”

The funny thing is, the game doesn’t see it that way at all. Whether that symbol missed by one position or ten, the result is exactly the same. It’s a losing spin. But our brains naturally see it as being so close, which makes us feel like we’re getting warmer.

I catch myself thinking that way sometimes too, even though I know every spin is completely independent of the last.

2. The Bonus Tease

You’ve probably heard me get excited when those first two bonus symbols land. The music changes. The reels slow down. It feels like something big is about to happen.

Then…nothing. I hate it.

Modern slot games are masters at building suspense. That slow final reel can make it feel like you almost got the bonus and just barely missed it. Sound familiar?

In reality, the outcome had already been determined before the reels finished spinning. The suspense is part of the entertainment (or so they say), but it can definitely make us feel like we’re closer than we really are.

3. Small Wins That Feel Like Big Wins

This is probably the most subtle one.

Have you ever bet $5 and won $3, only to have the game celebrate like you just hit a big win?

The music plays. Coins start flying across the screen. It certainly feels like a win. But when you stop and think about it, you’re actually down 2 dollars on that spin.

There’s even a name for this: a “loss disguised as a win.”

There’s nothing dishonest about it. It’s simply part of what makes slot games feel fun and exciting. But if you’re not paying attention, those celebrations can make it easy to lose track of how much you’re actually winning or losing.

What I Remind Myself When I Play

I want to be clear that none of this means slot games are cheating. They’re doing exactly what they’re designed to do – entertain us.

I still love playing slots, and I still get excited when the bonus symbols start landing. But understanding why certain moments feel so exciting has definitely made me a more mindful player.

Now when I see a near miss, a dramatic bonus tease, or a game celebrating a tiny payout, I remind myself that feeling close doesn’t change the odds. The next spin still has exactly the same odds as the last one.

For me, understanding these little design cues hasn’t made slots any less fun. If anything, it’s helped me enjoy the experience while making smarter decisions about my bankroll. And I think that’s a win all by itself.
