3 Ways to Stop Chasing Losses at the Casino

Written by Kelly Koffler

We talked about it before, chasing losses is one of the biggest mistakes that people make at the casino.

You’re down, the night isn’t going how you planned, and that little voice in your head says, “Just one more bonus, and I can turn this around.” It feels logical, but it never is. And we know it deep down.

So how do we stay in control in that very moment? Here are three practical things you can do the next time you hear that voice enticing you to play more.

1. Decide Your Limit Before You Sit Down

The worst time to decide how much you’re willing to lose is when you’re already losing.

Your judgment is swayed, your emotions are running hot, and nothing sounds better than winning it back.

So, make the decision before any of that happens. Set a hard number at the door, and treat it like it’s already gone. When you hit it, you’re done.

2. Take a Break

Taking a break can sometimes make all the difference between a good night and a bad night.

Not a “walk to the other side of the casino and find a different machine” break. I mean a real break – step outside, get some fresh air, grab a snack, and sit down somewhere quiet for ten minutes.

It might sound silly, but it works. Getting out of the environment breaks that mental loop that keeps you chasing.

Most people who blow their budget do it because they never took a second to breathe and think logically about the situation.

The casino isn’t going anywhere. The slots will still be there when you return.

3. Leave the Cash and Cards in the Room (or at Home)

You’ve set a budget. You have a plan. But, things don’t always go as expected.

Knowing this, take control before you lose control. Leave your cash and cards in the room, or at home if you’re local.

This helps you avoid making emotional decisions. Drawing the line in advance removes a hard decision in the moment.

Chasing losses is something most players can totally relate to, but with some planning, it is something we can stop before the urge kicks in
