What Only Veteran Slot Players Know (and You Should Too)

By Casino Kelly

Anyone can press a button on a slot machine. But if you’re here, I’m guessing you’re not just anyone. There are tips and tricks that only come with experience.

If you want to get more out of your casino trips than just a free cocktail and a fleeting thrill, stick with me as I’m about to share some insider tips.

As a seasoned slots player, I’m here to tell you how we play differently. We know the little moves that make a big difference. And once you know them too, it’s hard to unsee the people around you leaving money (and comps) on the table. And once you see it, it’s hard not to notice how many players are missing out.

So, whether you’ve been spinning for years or just starting to get serious, here are five things the real, deal slot players know and do that most people never think about.

1. Always Use a Player’s Card to Get Rewards

Seasoned players know the importance of using a player’s card. By using a player’s card each time you play, you accumulate points that can be exchanged for free play, meals, or even discounted or free hotel stays. It’s a simple yet effective way to maximize rewards.

2. Make the Most of Casino Hosts

Experienced players often build relationships with casino hosts. These hosts can provide personalized perks such as airport transportation or spa visits, and even invitations to exclusive events or tournaments.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

But what if you are new to a property or you don’t “qualify” for a host? Don’t let that discourage you from asking a host to check your account and see if you may be eligible for a comp.

Years ago, before I had a host assigned to me, I had no idea that I could just walk into a host office and ask for something. Now, I charge everything (meals, spa, etc.) to my room, and at the end of my trip, I ask a host to see if I am eligible to have my charges comped.

They almost always comp all or most of my charges, and if they say no, well, I was going to pay for it anyway, right? By the way, this works for cruise ship casinos as well!

4. Check for Promotions BEFORE Playing

Before putting a penny into a slot machine, smart slot players always check for current promotions and/or bonuses. Many casinos offer multipliers which must be selected at a kiosk or on the slot machine to be able to receive them.

For example, during my last visit to Peppermill Casino, there was a 7X point multiplier which really added up. I was able to use those points to pay for all of my meals.

Because these bonuses often will not be retroactive, you’ll definitely want to make it a habit to swipe your card as soon as you enter the casino. You certainly wouldn’t want to play for hours before remembering only to lose out on those valuable bonuses or promotions.

5. Gambling Should Be Entertainment Only

Remember, experienced slot players understand, and as the saying goes, “Casinos aren’t built on winners”. They are businesses designed to profit in the long run. Always approach gambling as a form of entertainment rather than a way to make money.

Keeping this in mind, set a budget that you are comfortable losing and have fun. If you happen to win, consider it a happy accident. This mindset will help you to enjoy gambling without the stress of chasing losses.

It’s little habits like these that separate the casual players from the ones who actually get something back. None of it is complicated but you’d be surprised how many people never bother to ask, swipe, or check.

So, next time you’re in the casino, think like a seasoned player. Play smart and stay sharp. You’re not just there to play, you’re there to play well.
